African Union: “No to arresting Gaddafi”
The African Union is going to have to involvement in arresting Moammar Gaddafi. He has to give up power, states the American Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
This statement came after the Summit Meeting, which took place in Malabo of Equatorial Guinea, with the participation of the heads of five states, namely South Africa, Congo, Mali, Uganda and Mauritania.
The goal of the African Union was to approve a set of proposals for a framework agreement aiming to a political solution in the Libyan crisis.
According to the statement “the members will not cooperate in the enforcement of the international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of the UN against the Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi”.
Moreover, addressing to the Security Council of the UN they ask “for the cancellation of the whole process in the ICC regarding Libya”.
It is reminded that arrest warrants were issued against the contested leader of Libya, Moammar Gaddafi, and members of his family, last Monday. The charges he faces include among others, crimes against humanity, committed from the 15th of February until today.
“To give up power”
On the other hand, the American State Secretary, Hilary Clinton, stated that Africa’s support to the operations in Libya “is strong and continues to grow”. While for Moammar Gaddafi she stated that he has to facilitate the transition and give up power instead of making threats.
